Title | Dr. Lylburn L. Downing |
Description |
A black and white photograph of Dr. L. L. Downing. Lylburn L. Downing began his pastorate at Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in July 1894 and was leader of the church until his death in February 1937. A native of Lexington, Virginia and a graduate of Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, Rev. Downing's spiritual development was strongly influenced by General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. General Jackson had taught Reverend Downing's parents in a Sunday school class. Rev. Downing and his congregation erected a frame church building on Fifth Avenue (now Patton Avenue) and Third Street in 1898. In 1906, Rev. Downing placed the "Stonewall" Jackson Memorial window in the church. The window has been preserved and was installed in the present church built in 1961. Rev. Downing was also involved in a number of civic betterment activities. For years he was the only African American member of the City Republican Committee and was Roanoke City's first probation officer. Fraternally, he was a Mason and Odd Fellow. |
